- If the micro-credential is to be offered by online, hybrid, or collaborative format, contigent approval from the IU Office of Online Education (OOE) is necessary during proposal development and prior to campus approval. The OOE approval notice must be included with the submitted proposal.
This process is initiated via the OOE Initial Request Form. - All graduate level micro-credentials must include the approval of the University Graduate School prior to campus approval and submission into APPEAR.

Definitions
- Micro-Credential. At the most basic level, micro-credentials verify, validate, and attest that specific skills and/or competencies have been achieved. They differ from traditional degrees and certificates in that they are generally offered in shorter or more flexible timespans and tend to be more narrowly focused. Micro-credentials can be offered online, in the classroom, or via a hybrid of both [source].
- Badge. Use of digital technologies to represent competencies and various learning achievements; electronic badges should include meta-data on the evidence of learning and link back to sponsoring institution and evaluation criteria [source].
